This chapter focuses on water intakes and diversion structures; their functions and common design requirements are described. For low-level intakes, types of intakes with different structural forms and application conditions are introduced; main facilities and layout forms are introduced according to operational conditions, and the characteristics to be considered for layout of pumped storage power station intakes are explained. For open-flow intakes, layout forms are described according to structural conditions and the concept of settling basin is introduced. In terms of design, contents of hydraulic design and structural design of intakes are introduced. For diversion structures, types and hydraulic calculation of channels and tunnels are elaborated, and the head pond and daily run-off pond are introduced.
