In this chapter, we first introduce the basic principles of hydropower generation and the types of hydropower stations and then summarize the development histories, achievements, and prospects of hydropower in the world, especially in China. The important roles of hydropower in the power grid and the world sustainable developments are emphasized. Students are required to understand the general development schemes of hydropower, recognize the irreplaceable place of hydropower in the modern energy system and economic development, and build up the confidence of joining the journey of developing this green renewable energy for the world.
