Effect of Sulfur Content on Filterable and Condensable PM2.5 Emissions from Diesel Generator

Particulate matter (PM2.5) emission from diesel generators contains a filterable (FPM2.5) and condensable (CPM) portion. In this study, five diesel fuel containing 10 ppm (GD10), 250 ppm (250 GD), 500 ppm (500 GD), 1000 ppm (1000 GD) and 2000 ppm (2000 GD) sulfur by weight were selected as generator fuel. U.S. EPA Method 201A/202 was followed to measure FPM and CPM emissions from the diesel generator and study the effect of sulfur content on FPM2.5 and CPM emissions. FPM2.5 concentrations for different sulfur-content diesel like GD10, GD250, GD500, GD1000, and GD2000 were 10.6, 12.8, 15.0, 15.1, and 17.4 mg/Nm3, respectively. CPM concentrations were obtained to be 118.2, 145.0, 187.3, 281.4, and 334.6 mg/Nm3 for GD10, GD250, GD500, GD1000, and GD2000, respectively. CPM concentrations were also increased with the increase in sulfur content. The distribution of organic fraction in CPM accounted for 75.1%, 69.3%, 56.3%, 51.6%, and 51.4% for respective increasing sulfur concentrations.
