Microplastics are usually difficult to degrade or bioaccumulate, can transfer via the nutrition chain, and can at the latest be a risk to people's health, and are widely spread in aquatic environments including oceans, in lakes, in rivers, and even drinking water. This study aimed to detect microplastics in Tigris River for Baghdad city. It was collected sample in one liter from six areas of Baghdad city: Fahama, Muthana Bridge, Sarafya Bridge, Abo Noas, Doura, and Madaen. The microplastic was estimated by a fluorescent microscopic screening using Nile dye. FTIR is applied to estimate microplastic compounds. Findings appeared there were important microplastic compounds in river samples including Nylon, Polyurethane, Polypropylene, Polystyrene, Polyvinyl chloride, Polypropylene, Polyethylene terephthalate, Polycarbonate, Nitrile, Polytetrafluorethylene. The size of microplastic at 38 µm with fiber shape is the most numerous and common in most of the study areas: Muthana Bridge (71%), Sarafya Bridge area (78.7%), Madaen area (48.78%). While fragments in Fahama area (55.5%) and Abo Noas area (65.38%), also pellets in Doura area (42.85%) were the most prevalent. In conclusion, Tigris River was polluted with microplastics. The fiber microplastics are dominant in the river.
