This study presents the contamination scale of microplastic distribution in the surface water, beach sediment, and green mussels of Langkawi Island, Malaysia. Samples were collected from May to November at different locations across the island using a standard operating procedure. Significant variability was observed in each location with southwest monsoon in July recorded a high average microplastics concentration in surface water at 1.48 \(\pm\) 1.79 particles m−3 while beach sediment samples recorded the highest average concentration in southwest and northeast monsoon at 395 \(\pm\) 301.32 and 490 \(\pm\) 280.54 particles kg−1. Green mussels recorded an average of 0.56 ± 0.58 particles g−1 per individual with fibers present in most individuals. Polymer categories differed in each sample, with each dominant polymer representing different sources. Our research provided insights into the influence of monsoons and anthropogenicity on microplastic pollution levels at the Malacca Strait on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia in both environment and biota samples.
