Plastic Waste Management in South Delhi

The unprecedented growth of India’s population in the past decades and their migration to the cities have increased the pace of urbanization in the country. The ever-increasing migration of people to the cities for various economic opportunities and educational purposes has not only increased the no. of people in cities but also changed their lifestyle which is supported by the constant expansion of industries and services. The simultaneous processes of migration, urbanization, and industrialization are contributing toward the generation of immense quantities of Municipal Solid Waste putting the health of the Environment at stake at large and of people in specific. Out of the total solid waste generated, plastic waste takes a significant amount and space. Out of the total plastic production in a year, single-use plastics alone account for 40% of the total. Its non-biodegradable, persistent nature and low recycling rate are making the situation even worse. Delhi is one most populated Indian cities grappling with the management of plastic waste. In the given study, an area of south Delhi has been undertaken to provide a detailed analysis of the plastic waste management ways at the household and community level. Some recommendations have also been provided based on the findings.
