Plastic Pollution, Treatment and Management Strategies in Pakistan: A Review

Plastic, a versatile and affordable polymer has been used in daily life since 1950. The rate of plastic production is rapidly increasing, leading to plastic pollution worldwide. Pakistan accounts for 15% annual increase in plastic waste due to high rate of mismanagement and improper waste disposal. Many case studies show that microplastic pollution is a growing environmental threat in Pakistan, with the Rawal Lake study revealing the presence of fibres and fragments as the most dominant types. Sustainable alternatives and recycling procedures are being developed to address the environmental effects of plastic waste. Governments worldwide are addressing plastic pollution at local, national, and international levels by prohibiting single-use plastics through reduce and reuse campaigns by turning plastic waste into asphalt or bricks. Innovative techniques like recycling, landfilling, and waste-to-energy are being explored to control plastic pollution throughout the world. Biodegradation by using plastic eating bacteria is another good option for complete plastic waste removal. Pakistan has started an initiative to control plastic pollution through Oxo-biodegradable technology to address plastic pollution in 2019, banned polythene bags in Islamabad, construction of plastic roads, and the Clean Green Pakistan Index aims to improve sanitation services through competition among cities and citizens. Waste-to-energy strategies such as pyrolysis and gasification, are also being used to recover energy and overcome recycling limitations but these strategies need effective monitoring and economic incentives in Pakistan. In addition, private organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund have launched a pilot project in Lahore to collect and recycle plastic. The policy statement prohibits the production, import, distribution, sale, and use of single-use plastic items in Islamabad and beverage containers made entirely from virgin plastic. Plastic pollution is a significant environmental threat not only in Pakistan but also throughout the world that require urgent actions through reduction, recycling, global cooperation, sustainable alternatives, strict regulation, and public awareness to protect the planet for future generation.
