The successful integration of doubled haploids in biotechnology and breeding has ushered in a new era of innovation in crop improvement. This chapter deals with the notable successful examples on the utilization of doubled haploids. Doubled haploids have become invaluable tools for crop breeders for the ability to rapidly generate homozygous lines. This approach has been particularly fruitful in enhancing crop traits such as disease resistance, yield, and stress tolerance, thus addressing critical challenges in global agriculture. Moreover, the use of doubled haploids has played a pivotal role in biotechnological advancements, enabling efficient gene mapping and the development of genetically modified crops. This technique, often employed in crops like wheat, maize, rice, brassica, chickpea cucumber, and apricot, has yielded prominent varieties with enhanced traits. Several superior rice varieties have been bred through haploid culture in China, Korea, Japan, and the United States. In wheat, varieties like DH-1 line have emerged as high-yielding cultivars with improved disease resistance. Barley has witnessed the development of varieties such as “Igri” and “Golden Promise,” known for their enhanced malting quality and disease tolerance. It also highlights the transformative impact of doubled haploids on modern agriculture and emphasizes their importance in addressing the ever-growing global demand for food security and sustainable crop production.
