Toward Universally Accessible Interactive Augmented Reality in Education: A Case Study of Developing a Photoelectric Effect Experiment in Interactive Augmented Reality

This chapter explores the creation of an approachable, affordable, and engaging augmented reality (AR) experience for instructing secondary pupils about the photoelectric effect experiment and provides a suggested workflow to guide educators and scholars in the creation of AR experiences. The project follows the Accessible, Interactive, Mobile, and Simple (AIMS) philosophy and makes use of free software, readily available materials, and low-end mobile devices that are not connected to the internet. The AR experience was created by a group of self-taught programmers and 3D modelers and includes custom 3D models, image recognition, and interactive virtual buttons. The experience, which was presented at the 2022 AI Expo Africa, received insightful comments that resulted in iterative improvements. In 2024, it will be put to the test in high schools in South Africa. The project shows that small research teams and dedicated teachers could create educational AR experiences using freely available platforms and 3D content creation tools streamlining the process further.
