The mediation of cultural heritage (CH) studies through immersive technologies is becoming more prevalent. Immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR) enable new opportunities for learning about CH through place illusion. The use of VR has led to new epistemological concepts and increased levels of engagement with the represented content. VR can expand our knowledge of CH sites by spatializing CH practices and their identity. However, many CH in VR experiences fail to create the cultural presence necessary for the representations of CH to embody the many layers that make up a CH site. Many experiences of CH in VR focus their efforts on representing the physical structures that make up a CH site, often neglecting the site’s intangible qualities. Since CH in VR experiences inform our understanding of historical realities and imaginations, these experiences need to be representative of as many facets of a CH site as possible. When CH in VR experiences fail to represent the multiple facets and intangible qualities of CH, they abstract our understanding of CH sites, limiting them to their physical structure. This paper proposes a methodology for working through data sources in a systematic way to construct immersive experiences that represent multiple dimensions of CH. This methodology can be used to represent immersive experiences of CH that represent both their tangible and intangible aspects. This is especially pertinent when working with demolished or degraded CH sites, as is common in the global south where non-physical data sources often outweigh physical ones. The paper uses Sophiatown (Johannesburg, South Africa) as a case study to demonstrate the viability of this methodology.
