We will focus on “Lesson Study” and “Teacher Rounds” as two examples of what supports the quality of teaching in Japan. Lesson Study is an educational experiment that has spread from Japan to the rest of the world, but these two practices are quite common in Japan. After describing the characteristics of each, the following three points will be pointed out as reasons why they have been effective in Japanese education. 1) Emphasis on “communication,” which is a fundamental value of Japanese education. 2) The experience of the teachers themselves as students and from their own childhood. 3) The fact that the method is tailored to the specifics of each subject, rather than a general method.
