Developmental dyslexia is a subtype of learning disabilities. Japanese has two non-alphabetic writing systems, kana and kanji, which are qualitatively different from alphabetic orthographies. It has been known that cognitive demands on the development of reading and spelling/writing skills depend on orthographic characteristics. This chapter introduces cognitive factors for the development of reading and writing abilities in Japanese, and developmental dyslexia among Japanese children, compared to findings in alphabetic orthographies. In addition, it introduces learning supports and interventions for developmental dyslexia in Japanese.
