Analytical Method for the Number of Consecutive Multi-circle Revisits of Ground Targets by Satellite

The paper proposes a method for the problem of analyzing the number of consecutive multi-circle revisits of ground target by a single satellite. The method first gives an analytical approach for determining the initial orbital parameters through the orbital inclination, the elevation and azimuth of the possible overhead points visible to the ground target; furthermore, the coverage equation of satellite to ground target are derived and a method for calculating the number of revisits by means of coverage equation are proposed. Numerical simulation is carried out by selecting multiple ground targets with different right ascension and latitude and fixing azimuth or elevation. Comparison of the results shows that the number of consecutive multi-circle revisits is only related to the orbital inclination and the latitude of ground targets when the satellite achieves its first over-top visit to the target, and also indicates that it can obtains a higher number of revisits when the inclination and latitude are similar.
