Chitosan-Based Ecofriendly Nanocomposites: Recent Advances for Environmental Remediation Applications

The aqueous environment is constantly polluted by numerous pollutants such as metal ions and organic molecules in various forms, and the pollution is increasing day-by-day. However, numerous researchers have created potential adsorbents to remove contaminants and purify water. Among all adsorbents, chitosan (CS) and its composite materials are receiving attention due to their low cost, eco-friendliness, and potential for removing and degrading pollutants from aqueous environments. CS is a naturally occurring polymer that is a deacetylated derivative of chitin. Because of the unique properties of CS-based materials, they have been successfully used for organic dye adsorption and photocatalytic destruction of organic molecules. In view of this, the present chapter emphasized the adsorption of dyes (cationic/anionic) and the degradation of biomolecules (drugs and pesticides) by CS and its composite materials.
