Sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of malignant tumours of mesenchymal origin that comprise approximately 1% of all malignancies. They are broadly divided into sarcomas of bone and soft tissue origin, and classified according to histological subtype. Practical distinctions are made according to the anatomical location: Extremity and superficial trunk, abdominal and retroperitoneal, pelvic, thoracic, and head and neck; these distinctions are useful for directing referrals to services with suitable surgical expertise. Extremity and bone sarcomas are usually treated by orthopaedic oncologists while retroperitoneal, thoracic, gynaecological, and head and neck sarcomas are treated by general surgical oncologists or regional subspecialty surgeons.
