This opening chapter gives an overview of the research presented in the book. It begins by situating this work within the context of study abroad and notions of ‘interculturality’—a term which has often been ill-defined, and at times contested. Through mapping the use of this term and raising questions about the assumed transformative nature of study abroad experiences, the need for a new approach to interculturality is clearly established. What is needed is an understanding of the processes involved in developing intercultural capacities over time; processes which this research will demonstrate to be laborious, uneven, embedded in practices, and deeply connected to specific pedagogic settings. Arguing for a more rigorous, empirical examination of how in-country education might foster intercultural capacities, this Introduction sets the scene for the specific context within which the research is conducted, concluding with a chapter outline.
