The term “metal organic frameworks” (MOFs) refers to a class of compounds, either metal ions or clusters, that are balanced with organic ligands to form one or more dimensional structures. Reticular synthesis generates MOFs, whose precise constituent selection can yield crystals with ultrahigh porosity and strong bonds between inorganic and organic units. It has not been demonstrated that other solids may increase their metrics without changing the underlying topology, nor can they demonstrate the same accuracy typically employed in chemical modification. MOFs may yield compounds that offer a synergistic combination of properties due to the form of building units and chemical compositions multiplying based on shapes. This chapter covers recent developments in MOF synthesis techniques as well as structural features. Additionally, it provides a brief overview of the various forensic fields in which MOFs are utilized.
