The Vulnerability Level of Residential Buildings in Surakarta City Related to Seismic Hazard

Indonesia is situated between three major plate confluences—the Eurasian, the Indo-Australian, and the Pacific Plates—hence, earthquake disasters frequently occur in Indonesian territory. Earthquake events often cause physical damage ranging from mild to severe, especially to people's houses that are built simply without calculating adequate strength to be able to withstand damage due to earthquake forces. The research aims to estimate the level of damage that occurred to buildings/residential houses in the Surakarta during earthquake. This research was conducted randomly by surveying residential buildings in Surakarta. The data collected is in the form of building geometry data, the materials used, and the quality of their strength. Survey data were analyzed to produce a fragility curve, which was then transformed into a vulnerability curve. The final result is the level of damage/repair cost to the building when it experiences an earthquake. It was found that the average repair damage cost for one house was 61.5%, and 53.95% was for two-story housing in Surakarta. Based on the average value of repair cost, it indicates that the two-story housings are more resilient than the one-story building in Surakarta City.
