Experimental Study of Confinement Reinforced Concrete Columns Using Strip Plate Steel

Reinforcing bars serve as a primary means of concrete confinement within reinforced concrete columns. An intriguing avenue for future research would be to examine the potential of utilizing other materials in place of stirrups. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of concrete columns with core confinement utilizing strip plate steel and deformed reinforcing steel as stirrup reinforcement. In this test, six-column specimens were subjected to axial load until collapse. The confinement behavior of the column specimens was discussed by evaluating column shortening, strains in longitudinal reinforcement, stirrup reinforcement, core concrete, peak axial load, and theoretical column compressive strength compared to actual compressive strength. It can be observed that the measured values of the confined concrete compressive strength for reinforced concrete columns with strip steel stirrups and conventional plate steel stirrups exhibit considerable discrepancies. The outcomes of this study indicate that there is an increase in the theoretical and actual confined concrete compressive strength. However, there is no statistically significant difference between columns with strip plate steel stirrup reinforcement and columns with conventional stirrup reinforcement.
