The performance of storage racking is strongly influenced by upright’s behaviour. Some of the characteristics of the steel profile such as perforations and cross-sectional area have negative impacts on its strength and stability. However, it was found that less research has been done on the method of strengthening perforated upright. This study has been made to investigate a strengthening method of the upright for a storage racking system. A steel plate with a thickness of 6.0 mm is bolted to the short upright with the aim to improve the compression resistance of an upright. Both upright with and without steel plate strengthening are tested experimentally to compare the failure load of each upright. The stub column test is conducted to determine the ultimate compression resistance of the short upright in accordance with EN15512. It can be concluded that the proposed strengthening method increases the compression resistance of the upright up to 73% with the addition of steel plate. All samples failed in local web buckling and distortional mode at the part where there are perforations in both upright and steel plates. Comparison with the theoretical predictions shows that the ratio of difference is in the range of 0.94 to 1.10. The findings from this paper propose an alternative method to improve the compression resistance of the upright, thus allowing the construction of the racking frame to a higher level.
