Dynamic Experiments on Masonry Walls Using Mortar Joints Mixed with Rubber Tire Crumbs and Fly Ash

Rubber Tire Crumbs (RTC) have obtained widespread use as a replacement material in concrete, mortar, soil, and asphalt applications. However, mortar mixed with RTC often exhibits a drawback of reduced compressive strength. To mitigate this, fly ash (FA) is added to RTC mortar to enhance strength. This study examines the dynamic properties of masonry walls with three types of mortar joints: ordinary mortar, RTC mortar, and RTC + FA mortar, focusing on damping capacity and natural frequency. Dynamic testing was conducted using the impulse method and recorded through accelerometer-meter sensors integrated into Android cellphones. The findings reveal that incorporating RTC and FA into mortar joints can elevate both the damping capacity and natural frequency of masonry walls. With 30% RTC content, the wall's damping increased by 3.8 times compared to the original, while the addition of 15% FA to 10% RTC mortar resulted in a doubling of damping. Moreover, the natural frequency of the wall increased by 1.3 times with the inclusion of 30% RTC and could reach 1.5 times with the addition of 15% FA. This study suggests further research to explore the bond between mortar and brick units.
