Building on earlier discussions of the essential role of discourse competence for producing intelligible, content-rich L2 performance, the second part of this book (i.e., chapters five and six) explored whether the positive effects of planning time, as observed in CALF measures (Complexity, Accuracy, Lexis and FluencyComplexity, Accuracy, Lexis and Fluency (CALF)), also extend to discourse-level performance. Specifically, it examined the impact of planning time on textual cohesion, coherence, and overall discourse competence in both narrative and argumentative tasks.
