With the rapid development of power systems, the application of 10 kV and 35 kV capacitor banks in power grids is increasing, and their safe and stable operation is of great importance for improving power quality and reducing power grid losses. The state monitoring of power capacitors faces the problems of large workload and high safety risks for disconnection tests, furthermore, high cost and low reliability for online monitoring. It is imperative to seek a low-cost, high-reliability, and efficient state monitoring method. This paper proposes a capacitor state diagnosis method based on the ratio of three-phase currents, discusses the scope of the method, and finds that it is suitable for 10 kV shunt capacitors with fuse protection of up to 5010kvar and all of the shunt capacitors with external fuse protection. It also builds a capacitor state monitoring platform based on Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition system, and conducts large-scale applications in Guangdong Power Grid. Finally, it verifies the effectiveness of the method by identifying 12 defective capacitors and its disassembly analysis.
