Effect of Size of Recycled Aggregates in Enhancing Load Carrying Capacity of Soils

Increasing demands for housing in urban areas and due to the non-availability of land, existing small buildings are getting demolished and high-rise structures are coming up. Disposing the demolition waste is also a great concern. In this work, an attempt is made to utilize the recycled aggregates as an infill material along with natural geocells in order to analyze the load carrying capacity of soil and study the effect of size of infill material on load carrying capacity. The experimental studies were conducted in a steel tank of size 750 × 750 × 750 mm on a loading frame set-up. Natural geocells of height of about 100 mm were made using areca sheaths and used to reinforce the soil. The studies were performed using recycled aggregates of sizes varying between 10 and 2.36 mm. Load versus settlement graphs were plotted for all the trials. The results showed that the geocell filled with recycled aggregate having size between 10 and 4.75 mm performed better than the smaller-sized aggregates.
