An Experimental Investigation on Reinforced Paver Blocks with C&D Waste as a Replacement of Fine Aggregate

As per the survey done in India, around 150 metric tons (35%–40%) per annum by 2022, of Construction and Demolition Wastes were generated. Construction and demolition (C&D) waste refers to the materials generated during the construction, renovation, demolition, and deconstruction of buildings and infrastructure. The construction and demolition wastes are categorized into various types. The use of construction and demolition waste in the construction has an emerging opportunity of low-cost paver blocks into practice. This experimental investigation of managing C&D wastes effectively by manufacturing a paver block brings out the solution to the problem of reduction of the C&D wastes, requirement of virgin raw materials and land pollution. The major aim of this investigation is on the Reinforced Cement mortar incorporated with C&D wastes. The C&D wastes are crushed into a fine powder and further processed. With the design mix of cement mortar and 1mm steel bars, the paver block is casted. The C&D waste about 0, 5, 10, and 15% in the fine aggregate part of cement mortar is partially replaced. The tests to examine the physical properties, mechanical properties, and abrasion test are done for 7 days and 28 days in this investigation. The results are compared with the nominal values of the respective products. The paver block with replaced C&D wastes possess the desired characteristics and these paver blocks can be used for pavements which replaces the high-cost paver blocks. This brings out the sustainable practice of converting waste to energy. The zero littering of re-consumable C&D wastes can be ensured by this process.
