Methods and Standards Using GeoStudio’s SLOPE/W—A Comparative Industry Perspective

Slope stability analysis stands as a pivotal aspect of geotechnical engineering, particularly in projects involving dredge slopes, embankments, and reclamation. This paper explores various methodologies employed in slope stability analysis, with a particular focus on GeoStudio’s SLOPE/W software. Beginning with an overview of historical developments in slope stability analysis, the paper delves into the selection criteria for different methods, including force equilibrium methods, force and moment equilibrium methods, grid and radius method, and entry–exit method. The findings highlight that while force equilibrium methods offer simplicity and speed, force and moment equilibrium methods provide more accurate results for complex geometries but require higher computational resources. Practical case studies illustrate the application of these methods in various scenarios, such as dredging slopes, container terminal expansions, and earth dam design, demonstrating their strengths and limitations. Furthermore, the paper discusses the significance of adhering to international and regional standards, through the case studies. By offering practical insights and guidance, this paper serves as a valuable resource for geotechnical engineers navigating the complexities of slope stability analysis in various engineering projects.
