Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji holds immense significance in Hindu mythology and is revered as a sacred pilgrimage site. Situated in Trikuta Mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, the pilgrims embark on a journey of approximately 13 km from the Katra base to the Vaishno Devi Temple, the trek is not just a physical journey but a spiritual one. The distinctive location of the shrine perched at high altitudes and falling under Seismic Zone V renders it prone to various natural hazards including earthquakes, shooting stones, landslides, heavy rains, etc. In efforts to avoid the reoccurrence of such occurrences, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board initiated a project in 2014, implemented in phases, to mitigate, stabilize, and secure 33 vulnerable locations on the Trikuta Hills. In Phases-I and II, 5 and 7 locations were protected respectively and in Phase-III, 8 locations were identified for Slope Protection and Rockfall Protection on slopes of trek from Adhkwari to Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan. The strategy employed to protect and stabilize the Trikuta hills involves employing various State of Art Technology like, high-energy absorption Rockfall barriers, high-strength steel wire-mesh, rolled cable net, and various concrete applications such as shotcrete, cladding, drilling, grouting, anchoring, and other tailored treatments designed for specific locations. In this paper Rockfall Mitigation works at Location 6 of Phase-III (CH: 0.700 km to CH: 0.775 km) along the trek from Adhkwari to Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan are discussed. Rockfall barrier of 3000 kJ capacity of heights 5 and 6 m is proposed for a length of 60 m to prevent the shooting stones from falling over the road. The deployed system is meeting its anticipated performance, instilling confidence among the pilgrims.
