Laboratory Electrical Resistivity Measurements for the Geoelectrical Characterization of Sandy Soil

The electrical resistivity test is one of the geophysical methods used as a subsurface investigation tool along with conventional methods like the Standard Penetration test, Static Cone Penetration test, etc. This method is reliable, non-destructive, and less time-consuming. The electrical resistivity of soil property depends on physical parameters predominantly, water content and density. These two properties play a vital role in many geotechnical works. In earlier research, a soil box method is employed to carry out laboratory tests on different types of soil to establish the relationship between electrical resistivity and parameters such as water content, void ratio and degree of compaction. In this study, a two-electrode soil box is fabricated and calibrated as per the guidelines of ASTM G187-18. For this research, two types of sandy soil classified as SW and SP according to the Indian Standard Classification are used. Variable parameters in the electrical resistivity measurement of soil are the effect of gradation and the spacing between the electrodes. The degree of saturation and the electrical resistivity of the well-graded soil appear to be related, whose R2 values are found to be 0.9945, 0.8655, and 0.9306 appropriately for an electrode spacing of 1.0, 0.8, and 0.6 depending on the soil box’s length.
