Property Study of Landfill Liner Using Polypropylene Fibre

Leachates generated from landfills pose a serious threat to groundwater resources. To prevent groundwater from being contaminated, a barrier is to be provide between the waste and groundwater. The barrier, which is generally in the form of a liner, plays an important role in impending fluid and attenuating contaminants generated from leachate in landfills. In this study, a liner prepared by Kuttanad soil, bentonite, and polypropylene fibre is proposed. Their properties are studied, particularly its hydraulic conductivity and adsorption of nickel using batch adsorption tests, and also a cracking analysis of the designed liner material is also carried out to assess its compatibility. The liner developed is Kuttanad clay mixed with 10% bentonite and 0.5% polypropylene fibre and its hydraulic conductivity is less than 10−9 m/s. Also, as leachate concentration increases the amount of adsorbed material increases. The measure of cracking is CIF, and its value decreases as the percentage of fibre increases. The ideal fibre content was chosen to be 0.5%, which reduces cracks from soil-bentonite mix by 52.94% in oven-dried condition and 62% in air-dried condition.
