A Blueprint for Climate-Resilient Urban Flood Drainage Master Planning

Globally, the frequency of urban floods has increased because of climate change-induced rainfall and the continuously unplanned expansion of urbanization. Further, Unplanned and insufficient drainage capacity exacerbates the effects of urban floods in cities. The objective of the present study is to propose a strategic framework for development of Urban Flood Drainage Master Plan (UFDMP). The strategy development focused on the four basic principles of urban planning and designing: place-making, well-being, legibility, and sustainability. The placemaking suggests the area-based development of the drainage system; both qualitative and quantitative analysis will provide an in-depth understanding of designing the flood-mitigating drainage. Also discuss few for other principles addressing flood risks and enhancing drainage systems contributes to the creation of attractive and liveable spaces, fostering community well-being and sustainable urban development. Finally, proposing the right of way for the flood drainage system along with the nature-based solutions. The study explores the data requirements, critical approaches, planning principles, steps involved, and challenges in UFDMP preparation. The study proposed a framework for comprehending the context and specifications for urban drainage planning. The second section of the document explains the methodical procedures needed to develop a UFDMP, including data gathering, stakeholder involvement, flood modelling, infrastructure assessment, and the creation of sustainable urban drainage systems. The concept put forth has universal application and is replicable for places with minor changes. The approach proposed the integration of scientific, community and stakeholder engagement for a resilient and sustainable urban flood drainage system.
