Large urban centers worldwide, including Karachi, grapple with the severe consequences of climate change. As the largest coastal city in Pakistan, Karachi faces an array of climate-related challenges, from heatwaves to rising sea levels and extreme weather events. A significant factor contributing to climate change is Pakistan’s dependence on fossil fuels, which constitute 57.7% of the country’s energy production, largely from natural gas, coal, and furnace oil. Presently, Karachi’s peak electricity demand hovers around 3300 MW, with the sole operational wind power project in proximity being the Zorlu Energy Wind Power Project, generating a modest 54 MW. Renewable energy technologies, renowned for their sustainable characteristics, assume a main role in strengthening urban sustainability and combating climate change, especially in highly vulnerable urban areas like Karachi. Yet, Karachi remains contingent on national-level policies for renewable energy initiatives. In light of the pressing need to address climate change and its repercussions, a transition towards sustainable renewable energy technologies is imperative. This study aims to comprehensively assess various forms of renewable energy technologies, their interactions with climate change, and their adaptive and mitigating potential in safeguarding urban sustainability within Karachi. The research primarily relies on qualitative data collection through an extensive process of internal, external, and online desk research. It identifies solar, wind, and biomass technologies as essential tools for adapting to and mitigating urban climate change impacts in Karachi. Furthermore, it underscores Karachi’s current reliance on national renewable energy policies, with a notable absence of localized initiatives aimed at supporting the city’s growing urban population. To tackle urban sustainability and climate change issues, Karachi’s administration must focus on reassessing their policies and actively embrace the implementation of sustainable renewable energy technologies within the city.
