Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Resilient Infrastructure and Built Environment: Lessons from Asia Pacific

Climate change continues to intensify environmental challenges, impacting infrastructure, urban systems, and community resilience. This chapter examines disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate adaptation strategies for the built environment, particularly in the Asia–Pacific region. It highlights the significance of resilient urban planning, sustainable water management, and climate-smart practices in addressing these challenges. The discussion integrates key resilience principles, emphasizing the role of governance, community participation, and adaptive strategies to enhance sustainability. Various case studies illustrate how peri-urban flooding, landslides, heat stress, and water insecurity affect vulnerable populations, demonstrating the need for localized, inclusive adaptation measures. The chapter underscores the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, integrating scientific knowledge with traditional practices to strengthen resilience. By aligning urban development with climate-responsive strategies, this chapter provides insights into sustainable solutions for mitigating risks while ensuring the long-term stability of infrastructure and communities in the face of climate change.
