Since 2014, India has implemented a legal mandate for corporate social responsibility where corporations are required to invest or donate to social causes or other organizations. In this essay I will argue that from a psychological perspective, however, fulfilling these legal requirements does not complete the social and spiritual responsibilities that an organization has to the people, culture and society it exists in. Specifically in the Indian context, there is a need for a discourse that considers the unconscious psychological functioning of corporations in juxtaposition with the unique dynamics of the psyche of the individual members and society. Corporations as entities are not distinct or unique in their function simply by being present; they have an organizational self around which their interests are based. In addition, the corporation does not exist in vacuum; the influences of the individual members cannot be removed from the corporation or organization itself. These persistent influences from the members impact the dynamics within an organization. For an organization based in Indian society, these dynamics determine the corporate culture.
