Where did the ancient Huai River reach the sea? The question still eludes us. Perhaps it vanished under layers of accumulated silt throughout the ages, or was lost during multiple Yellow River diversions recorded in historical texts, or it might rest quietly beneath the city of Huai’an, named after the river itself. A great river without an estuary is perilous. Small tributaries, through a vast drainage system, can generate monstrous waves and limitless floods downstream. Thousands of years have passed, and the natural estuary of the Huai River is no more, yet Huai’an, a city of historical and cultural significance, continues to thrive. Perhaps the answer lies in the Grand Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou, a man-made waterway flowing through Huai’an.
