Jining, this gem of southwestern Shandong, was nurtured in the bed of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, simultaneously adding splendor to the canal itself. Jining shared the canal’s ups and downs: the excavation of the Shandong Canal breathed new life into the city, while the rise of canal transport brought a historical brilliance, making it shimmer brightly. Yet, the decline of the canal dulled its shine, gradually pushing Jining to the sidelines. The weight of historical dust obscured its light, gradually fading from people’s view. With the renewed interest in the canal’s history and the exploration of its ancient relics, new opportunities once again favored this city. Jining, “The Canal Capital of China,” once again stepped onto the historical stage.
