Historically, Yangzhou was first known as a regional term, originally one of the nine provinces in ancient China. According to the “Book of Documents · Yu Gong”, it says: Ji, Yan, Qing, Xu, Yang, Jing, Yu, Liang, and Yong, are the nine provinces. Although the understanding of the nine provinces may vary, Yangzhou is always one of them, without exception. However, looking at it longitudinally, Yangzhou before the Six Dynasties had nothing to do with the modern concept of Yangzhou. Today’s Yangzhou was called the Han Kingdom during the Spring and Autumn Period, and was subsequently named Jiangdu, Guangling, and Wu. It was not until the ninth year of Kaihuang in the Sui Dynasty (589 AD), when Emperor Wen of Sui renamed Wu to Yangzhou and established the General’s Office. Yang Guang became the chief executive of Yangzhou. Since then, Yangzhou has had its own name.
