This paper explores the evolution of urban planning strategies through the lens of agrarian urbanism, a concept that integrates urban spaces with agricultural areas to address the challenges of food supply and industrialization in large cities. Beginning with historical precedents like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacre City, I trace the development of agrarian urbanism through innovative models such as the New Regional Pattern by Ludwig Hilberseimer and the Agrarian City by Kisho Kurokawa. I then examine contemporary approaches, including the ecourbanism advocated in Andrea Branzi’s Agronica project and the Continuous Productive Urban Landscapes (CPULs) initiative led by Andrè Viljoen, Katrin Bohn, and Joe M. Howie. These concepts challenge traditional urban forms by promoting cities with integrated agricultural elements, fostering sustainable relationships between humans, their habitats, and the natural environment. By blending urban and rural landscapes, these approaches offer new perspectives on urban design that prioritize ecological sustainability, food security, and community well-being.
