Compressive Strength of Tyre Rubber Reinforced Cemented Aggregate Fill

Mining is the fourth largest industry in Australia operating as both underground and open cut mines. Underground mining relies on backfilling of stopes to maintain the stability of the mined region. One common method of backfilling is to fill the empty stopes with cemented rock fill (CRF). This project proposes to improve the stability of CRF using tyre derived rubber as reinforcement. Large scale unconfined compressive strength tests were carried out to determine the compressive strength of rubber reinforced CRF. Shredded rubber was added in varying quantities of 5, 10 and 20% by volume to aggregate mixtures simulating CRF. The results indicated that about 5% rubber can be added to CRF while maintaining the minimum compressive strength needed in the field. The outcome of this project will enable the use of waste tyres as a construction material in mining industry while solving a major environmental problem posed by waste tyres.
