Therapeutic Strategies to Treat Biofilm-Associated Infection in Livestock
摘要
Livestock, a good source of income for the farmers, needs careful handling of the animals and birds and proper management of their health conditions. Care and management of the livestock include protection from diseases, mainly those that are biofilm-mediated, since these are chronic and often fatal. The biofilm-borne common infections target the various systems of the livestock, including respiratory, cardiovascular, reproductive, integumentary and nervous systems leading to the ailment and consequent loss in production. The impenetrability of the antimicrobials to the target cells rendered by the biofilm matrix has made their management more challenging. Hence, a number of strategies are being adopted to hinder various steps involved in biofilm synthesis. Apart from using antibiotics, a number of natural phytocompounds, peptides and peptide mimetics and various nanosystem-mediated drugs are found to be effective in combating the biofilm-mediated diseases in livestock farms and thereby ensuring farm biosecurity management.
