The Impact of New Energy Vehicle Development on Residential Electricity Demand—An Empirical Study Based on Panel Data from 31 Provinces in China

Since the 2010s, China's new energy vehicle (NEV) industry has made significant progress, and the growth of NEVs has important implications for marketing in the power system. To analyze the impact of NEV development on residential electricity demand and achieve precise marketing, this study utilizes panel data from 31 provinces in China from 2013 to 2022 and applies a fixed effects model to examine the influence of NEV sales on residential electricity consumption. The results show that the advancement of NEVs effectively boosts the rise in residential electricity demand, with this impact displaying regional variations. Specifically, in the eastern and central regions, the expansion of NEVs results in an uptick in residential electricity consumption, with this promotional effect slightly more pronounced in the central region than in the eastern region. Conversely, the progress of NEVs in the western region does not notably affect residential electricity consumption. Drawing on these findings, this study offers suggestions for precise marketing in the power system and government policy development.
