In terms of growth and development, 2001 is quite the watershed year for ELT. The world has settled down to the status of English as Lingua Franca. Most communities realize that political and territorial identity occupies one box while the demands of global communication spin their own imperatives. The word ‘consolidation’ is the buzz-word for this year as all the concerns of the classroom, the major undercurrents from the world in which the classroom is immersed and the experiences of stakeholders converge to create an ecosystem that nurtures a dynamism which becomes the hallmark of ELT. Questions of context and identity can no longer be swept under the carpet as they form a major component of this vibrant field.
