This study takes the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as an example to explore the structure of intercultural interactions between foreign tourists and the tourism destination and see how it can impact the destination image perception. We performed a qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with a group of foreigners living in Guangdong from 14 different countries. The study discovers that the foreign tourists interact with the tourism destinations in many critical encounters. It can be summarized in four different dimensions including material, society, institution, and symbol. They shaped the image of the interviewees’ overall perception of this tourism destination, the China Greater Bay Area. As a result, an intercultural interaction structure model is constructed. We hope that the outcome and recommendations from this study can be helpful for the tourism destination image and strategy development in the post-pandemic era in this area.
