The Consistency Theorem

  • Balkrishna Shetty

摘要

The Consistency Theorem shows why consistency and, hence, logical rigor, is critically important in Mathematics, not only in the presence of unexpected and even weird, though valid, propositions, but also due to a history of multiple battles against mental inertia and subtle conceptual and logical errors in regard to, for example, numbers, continuous processes, sets, etc. The Theorem provides insights into human cognitive behaviour via the postulated Consistency Filter Mechanism. It offers understanding of the historical development of Mathematics as a dialectical process involving creative interpretations for overcoming conceptual and methodological limitations in extant theories. Furthermore, consistency has ensured timeless authoritativeness and universal acceptance of Mathematics.
