Earth Restore: Sustainable Transition Towards a Resilient Urban Society—Insights from an Indian Case Study

Cities in India are facing increasing levels of pollution from PM2.5, PM10, CO, Sox, NOx and CO2, a growing concern for public health. According to a 2011 study, urban areas alone produce 80% of CO2 pollution in India, resulting in 3.1 million lost years of healthy life and more than 500,000 deaths. Another report by the World Air Quality in 2021 states that India’s average PM2.5 concentration in 2020 was 40.1 μg/m3, more than four times the WHO's recommended 10 μg/m3 level. Urban green spaces can contribute to mitigating these adverse effects. The impact of green spaces should not be solely measured in terms of inputs and outputs but rather in the overall outcomes they produce. Positive social outcomes of Green Verges include reducing economic disparities, promoting native plant diversity, and improving community well-being. This is a case study of Earth Restore in India, which is working towards creating sustainable urban forests and transitioning towards resilient societies. Green spaces offer a sustainable solution to the cities, like reducing pollution load through carbon sequestration, promoting traditional knowledge and cultural practices, and improving community well-being. By reducing economic disparities and promoting native plant diversity, green spaces can also contribute to sustainable development. The Earth Restore initiative serves as a model for other organizations seeking to create sustainable urban ecosystems through a multistakeholder approach.
