Software-defined networking is an architectural framework that significantly simplifies network management by decoupling the data plane from the control plane. This separation allows network administrators to benefit from enhanced controllability and visibility across the entire network, particularly through a centralized logical controller that streamlines security management. While SDN offers advantages over traditional networks such as reduced attack frequency and improved shielding of network devices these same features can also introduce vulnerabilities and increase the impact of potential attacks. The reconfiguration inherent in SDN’s architecture presents both new opportunities and challenges, especially in terms of security. Although many believe that SDN’s capabilities will ultimately lead to improved security, the technology also harbors risks in its current state. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the security landscape in the SDN, with a particular focus on the control plane a critical yet underexplored component in safeguarding this technology. We examine recent advancements in SDN, identify key vulnerabilities, and introduce a novel SDN attack vector. Furthermore, we offer a thorough evaluation of the challenges involved in securing the SDN control plane, alongside a critical review of existing solutions, highlighting their limitations. This research underscores the significance of security frameworks and explores the diverse security services developed based on SDN technology.

摘要
