Forest Preventives, Mitigation Measures, Strategies, and Challenges

Over 2 billion people rely on forest resources for their basic needs, means of subsistence, sources of employment, and sources of income. Over the last 30 years, 420 million hectares of forest have been vanished due to diversion to many land uses, an area larger than India, and an additional 100 million hectares are at risk, according to the FAO of the United Nations, which estimates that there are just over 4 billion hectares of forest cover worldwide, or about 31% of all land area while deforestation rates are still alarmingly high. Over the past ten years, about 13 million hectares of forest have either been lost to natural causes or converted to other uses. There is no disputing that forest fires are expected to become more severe and undermine the nation’s ecological and socioeconomic structure as a result of a warming and changing environment. By 2030, Indian forests have the capacity to absorb an additional 3 billion tons of CO2 equivalent while preserving livelihoods for 22% of the population, or 275 million people. In times of crisis, forests have long offered people and communities socioeconomic safety nets. Numerous ecosystem services that forests offer contribute to the fulfillment of humankind’s fundamental needs. Forests make numerous contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals and assist in regulating the climate. In the context of sustainability forest prevention, a number of methodologies and ideas have been created, including criteria and indicators, forest programs, models, and forest certification programs, etc. These technologies can also support and offer solid justifications for carbon sequestration, which is an issue that requires urgent worldwide attention. The methods for forest prevention and mitigation measures, which may also contain carbon-related goals, are considered as requiring proper management plans as precondition. The full utilization of the mitigation potential of forest preventative and mitigation approaches is hindered by economic considerations, which is a significant hurdle. A supportive atmosphere for contemporary technologies and procedures is necessary for the mitigation potential to be realized. The institutional capability, investment capital, remote sensing and GIS technology, artificial intelligence-based monitoring systems, research, development, and transfer, as well as proper regulations and incentives, all play a significant role in creating the right environment for forest prevention. However, due to improvements in agriculture, forest operators around the world have started to pioneer the use of cutting-edge technologies to enhance forest management. The plan emphasizes the need for increased coherence, cooperation, coordination, and synergy as being crucial in strengthening the contribution of forests to accomplish sustainable development goals and the fate of humans on this planet Earth. This is because forests are cross-sectoral in nature.
