Contemporary Discourse on the Farm-to-Fork Concept of the Blue Economy: Exploration for Halal Industry Sustainability
摘要
This chapter explores the integration of the Farm-to-Fork concept within the Blue Economy framework to enhance sustainability in the Halal industry. Utilising the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) methodology, which examines how language and discourse shape and reflect social practices, power relations, and ideologies, the insightful results reveal that sustainable aquaculture and fishing practices have a significant impact on food security, economic growth, and compliance with Halal standards in Muslim-majority countries. These practices ensure a stable food supply, improve nutritional quality, stimulate economic growth and attract investment. To achieve these benefits, the chapter proposes a multidimensional framework that aligns sustainable development goals with Islamic guidelines and includes policy development, certification systems, technological innovations for traceability, and robust stakeholder partnerships. Key challenges identified in the Blue Economy farm-to-fork approach include complex supply chains, lack of standardization, technological gaps and fraud risks. Proposed solutions include blockchain technology, uniform certification standards, capacity building and strict regulatory enforcement. Practical implications for policymakers include the development of harmonized regulations that integrate blue economy principles with halal standards. This includes creating comprehensive policies that mandate sustainable practices throughout the supply chain and promoting standards that address environmental sustainability and halal compliance. Industry practitioners are encouraged to use technological solutions such as blockchain for greater transparency and consumer trust and to use digital platforms for better coordination and compliance with standards. Ongoing education and training programs for all stakeholders are essential to raise awareness of halal integrity and sustainable practices.
