Evaluating Public Perception of ChatGPT’s Impact on the Job Market Through Twitter Sentiment Analysis Using the VADER Model
摘要
According to literature survey, automating tasks through AI technologies can lead to job displacement and potential unemployment, particularly in roles involving repetitive and routine tasks (George in Partners Univ Int Res J 2:20–39, 2023 [1]). The impact of ChatGPT and AI on jobs will vary depending on the specific job and industry (Biswas in Will ChatGPT take my job? Replies and advice by ChatGPT [2]). It is as yet too early to categorically estimate ChatGPT’s actual impact on jobs. Therefore, in the interim, this report presents a sentiment analysis to understand people’s opinions on the possible impact of AI technologies like ChatGPT on the job market. Tweets on Twitter from 30 November 2022, to 29 March 2023, were considered for sentiment analysis. Approximately 719,295 English tweets containing the word ChatGPT were available for analysis. From this, the tweets containing the words “job,” “employment,” “occupation,” “profession,” “business,” and “placement” were filtered for further analysis. Sentiment analysis was performed on these tweets using the VADER model. VADER, short for Valence Aware Dictionary and Sentiment Reasoner, is a powerful text sentiment analysis tool. It is based on a set of rules and a lexicon, and can accurately assess the emotional tone of a particular text. This study presents a comprehensive sentiment analysis on ChatGPT with the mentioned keywords, and thereby explores how this technology is likely to shape the job market. The overall finding is that while the general sentiment about ChatGPT ranges from neutral to positive, there is considerable concern among the public about its possible impact on the job scenario.
