During the forty years prior to what is stated here, archaeologists believed that no hominid inhabited China and that there was no continuous stone culture. However, research on a train of archaeological discoveries has gradually proved that China was inhabited by primitive human beings throughout the entire Stone Age. This chapter gives a brief introduction to Stone Age cultures in China with examples from four representative cultural sites, including the Choukoutien and Ordos Loop (also referred to as Hetao, 河套) subcultures. More detailed discussions are given later in the book.
