The Impact of High-Speed Railway on Population Mobility

The previous chapter examined the impact of HSR development on the spatial distribution of China’s economy. The development of HSR has promoted spatial economic agglomeration, driven by the flow of human capital resulting from reduced trade costs. So, at the regional level, how does the reduction in transportation costs affect human mobility and consequently influence the regional spatial structure? At the municipal level, does the development of HSR lead to changes in the internal spatial structure of cities or suburbanization? This chapter will analyze these questions.
